Monastery of Novacella
The Augustinian monastery of Novicella was founded in 1142 by the bishop of Brixen, Hartmann. From the beginning the monastery was a resting point for the pilgrims on their way to the holy land or the Vatican, a well known nursing home and an important reference point for the ecclesiastic world. The big
library with his precious handwritings, the luminous
basilica, the
gothic cloister and the
pinacotheca with his gothic panel paintings are testimonies of the monastery history. Even thou 850 years have passed, the monastery still carries its functions of
education centre (boarding school and training facility with pastoral tourism, bible work, ecocentre and computer school) and of
parish pastoral work (20 rectories). The monastery was and is completely autonomous, thanks to his goods: woods, vineyards and a wine cellar are still in the possession of the monastery.
